Violist Junping Qian joined the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in August 2015 and won the co-principal chair in October 2015. He has earned his Bachelor degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA in May of 2013. Previously he graduated from the middle school affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory. His main teachers included Roberto Diaz, Hsin-yun Huang, Li Sheng and Fei Wu.

 

Junping Qian is a recipient of many prizes and scholarships, includes 2nd prize winner of 2006 Washington Johansen International Competition, 1st prize winner of 2007 China National Viola Competition and 2008 MMB Chamber Music competition and etc.

 

He has taken masterclasses under Nobuko Imai, Joseph dePasquale, Kim Kashkashian, Hariolf Schlichtig, Donald Mcinnes, Lawrence Dutton, Misha Amory, Michael Tree,  Pinchas Zukermann,  Hatto Beyerle,  Aaron Rosand, Paul Coletti, and Yaoji Lin.

 

His orchestral experiences included Shanghai Youth Orchestra (2005-2008, Principal viola), Asian Youth Orchestra (2006), Shanghai Sinfonietta (2007-2008 Assistant Principal viola), Curtis Symphony Orchestra (2009-2013 Assistant Principal viola), Symphony in C (2010-12), Verbier Festival Orchestra (2011-2012, Principal viola in 2012).

 

His festival experiences included Verbier Festival, Pierre Monteux School, Shanghai Spring Music Festival, Dresden Music Festival, Morningside Music Bridge, Great Mountain Music Festival, Benjamin Britten Festival at Philadelphia, Asian Youth Orchestra and the Performing Arts Institute.

 

Besides his viola career, he is also a conductor. He was an assistant conductor fellow in University of Cincinnati during 2013-2014 season. Now he is also studying at the conducting master’s program at Hochschule für Musik Hans Eisler Berlin.
