Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto needs no introduction: its elegant construction and melodic beauty have made it a favourite ever since its first performance. The composer’s genius for melody is also a striking feature of the Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise), his joyous choral symphony. Written for the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press and taking Beethoven’s 9th Symphony as its model, this immense 2nd Symphony is a stirring cantata in which the whole world unites in a triumphant celebration of enlightenment and a paean of thanksgiving for salvation. Join the City of London Choir, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Hilary Davan Wetton for an evening of sublime music.
